Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a process of bone demineralisation resulting in more porous and therefore weaker bone structure. The effected bones are more prone to fracture. The person often has no idea as there can be no symptoms prior to this. It is far more common in females than males and is the number one cause of fractures in the elderly population. Prevention is the best management. Check with you GP who can order bone densiometry if you are at risk. Sometimes medication is indicated, certainly weightbearing exercise has been shown to help maintain bone health. There are many programs that can assist with strength/resistance training and balance training as a two fold approach to increase bone strength and reduce falls. Pilates is an excellent, safe way to combine these factors.
